In 1976, a vision was set in motion to build homes worthy of one of America’s most storied cities.
50 years later, that vision continues to shape the Charleston landscape. What began as a small construction company founded by George Cook has grown into Cook Bonner Ebeling, one of Charleston’s longest continuously operating custom home builders.
Throughout Charleston, Cook Bonner Ebeling has built homes that harmonize with their surroundings while reflecting the distinctive style and spirit of the Lowcountry.
Today, as the city’s landscape and culture continue to evolve, Cook Bonner Ebeling remains rooted in the same principles that first shaped its legacy: thoughtful design, exceptional craftsmanship, and homes built to stand the test of time.
Where It All Began: Founding & Early History
The Cook Bonner Ebeling story began in July of 1976 when George Cook founded what was then known as Cook Construction.
At the time, Charleston was beginning to emerge as one of the country’s most desirable coastal destinations. Even in those early years, Cook recognized the importance of building homes that respected the region’s architectural heritage and natural surroundings.
From the start, the company focused on custom homes built with exceptional craftsmanship and a highly personal approach to client relationships. Each project was treated as a partnership – a philosophy that continues to guide the company today.
This dedication to quality and integrity quickly earned the firm a reputation as one of Charleston’s longest-established custom home builders.
The Decades of Craftsmanship
1976–1985: Establishing the Standard
During its earliest years, Cook Construction focused on building custom homes rooted in traditional Lowcountry architecture.
Through careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, the company began establishing its reputation in Charleston’s highly respected building community. In the years that followed, Cook Construction went on to build over 500 high-end home projects across the Lowcountry.
1986–1995: Growing with Charleston
As Charleston expanded, the company grew alongside it. In 1991, George Cook welcomed Rick Bonner as his partner, bringing valuable procurement and construction experience.
This partnership strengthened the firm’s ability to take on larger custom projects while preserving the personalized approach that had defined its success.
1996–2005: Innovation Meets Tradition
As Charleston’s coastal communities continued to develop, Cook Bonner balanced innovation with tradition. New building technologies and evolving design influences were incorporated while preserving the timeless character of Lowcountry architecture.
This ability to adapt while honoring tradition became a defining characteristic of the company’s work.
2006–2015: Resilience and Refinement
Following the challenges of the 2008 housing market, Cook Bonner remained focused on quality craftsmanship and long-term client relationships.
In 2013, David Ebeling joined the partnership, helping guide the firm into its next phase while continuing the company’s tradition of building exceptional custom homes.
2016–2026: Modern Luxury, Timeless Roots
As Charleston gained national recognition as one of the most desirable places to live, demand for thoughtfully and sustainably designed custom homes continued to grow.
In 2020, David Ebeling became managing partner, and Tray McCune joined the leadership team. Together, they continue guiding the company forward while honoring the legacy established by George Cook and Rick Bonner.
What began as a small company devoted to careful craftsmanship and close client partnerships has evolved into a firm recognized for modern luxury homes, while still honoring the principles that defined its early years.
The Philosophy That Never Changed
While styles and technology have evolved over the past fifty years, the core philosophy behind Cook Bonner Ebeling has remained consistent.
Craftsmanship is non-negotiable. Every home is designed and built to last.
Equally important is the company’s custom approach. Each project reflects the homeowner’s lifestyle while remaining rooted in the character of the Lowcountry landscape.
Decades of experience building along Charleston’s rivers, marshes, and coastal communities have also shaped the firm’s deep understanding of the region’s environment and architecture.
Lastly, CBE’s long-standing relationships with trusted architects, tradespeople, and vendors foster a collaborative network that ensures every detail is executed with precision.
At its core, Cook Bonner Ebeling believes a home is far more than a structure. It is a reflection of the people who live there and the landscape that surrounds it.
The People Behind the Legacy
Behind every Cook Bonner Ebeling home is a team dedicated to craftsmanship and collaboration.
Founder George Cook established the company’s foundation with a commitment to integrity and quality. Rick Bonner’s partnership helped grow the business while preserving its highly personal approach to custom homebuilding.
Today, principals David Ebeling and Tray McCune continue carrying that legacy forward. Supported by a trusted team of project managers and craftsmen, they guide each project with the same commitment to excellence that defined the company from the beginning.
Over the years, many client relationships have extended beyond a single project, with homeowners returning to build again or referring friends and family – a testament to the trust built over generations.
Homes That Define the Lowcountry Landscape

Across Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry, Cook Bonner Ebeling homes reflect the region’s diverse landscapes and lifestyles.
One remarkable example is the Edisto River Retreat, a haven designed as a place to slow down and reconnect with nature. Set along the banks of the Edisto River, the home was thoughtfully created as a private getaway where friends and family can gather. Expansive outdoor living spaces, a pool that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, and guest cottages positioned throughout the property create a retreat-like setting that celebrates the beauty and quiet rhythm of riverfront life.
Another distinctive project is the Wando River Oasis, a waterfront residence designed to make the most of its riverfront location. With generous outdoor living areas and large windows that capture natural light, the home harmonizes refined design with its scenic setting.

The Brickyard Farm House offers a different interpretation of Lowcountry living. This farmhouse-inspired property blends traditional charm with modern comfort, featuring classic materials and architectural details such as wooden floors, expansive porches, and inviting gathering spaces that make the home both visually striking and welcoming.
Projects like these demonstrate how Cook Bonner Ebeling approaches every home as a unique opportunity to create something lasting. Each home not only reflects its surroundings, but also the lives of the people who will inhabit it.
The Next Chapter: 50 Years Strong and Building

Reaching fifty years is an important milestone, but for Cook Bonner Ebeling, it is also a moment to look ahead.
With deep roots in Charleston and a continued commitment to exceptional craftsmanship, the company remains focused on building custom homes that honor the Lowcountry’s architectural heritage while embracing modern design.
Most importantly, CBE recognizes that its legacy exists because of the clients who have trusted it to bring their homes to life.
As the next generation of homeowners looks toward the Lowcountry, Cook Bonner Ebeling stands ready to continue the work that began in 1976.
